Student Diaries
|
The students and staff completed diaries at the end of each day to reflect on the events during their time in Zambia. The experiences by each person varied from day to day. However, the clear similarities between each diary was the effect the experience was having on each person and the impact the coaching was having on the students from the schools in Zambia. It was a truely amazing time for all. A selection of experiences can be read below. Soon you will be able to read all of the diaries written by staff and students so check back soon! |

First Day of Coaching
Arrive at school at 8.30am and sort out the tags, bibs and balls.
When the kids arrived we did some ball familiarisation games:
After that, we did some tag familiarisation games:
I tried to get both sexes included equally in these games, some ideas for this were to ensure passing the ball to a boy then to a girl. If a student was really good, I made the game more challenging, but if someone was struggling with the game I made the game easier. |

Today was very hard and stressful. It was difficult to think of other games and activities for the kids to do after they had completed all the other activities. Overall, a great day but I need to work on delivering a variety of extension games. |

Today was our first day of coaching at the schools. It was a very hard day and very stressful, but the rewards were greater than the set-backs.
We started the day by going to Chilanga Basic School and teaching the kids there. This was quite hard because some of the kids didn’t speak English and it was very hard to think of other games for the kids to do.
At lunch we went to Guardian Angel School. This was a shock because the kids in the school either have no parents, one parent only or their parents are dying. However, it was a real privilege to help the kids have a good day and put their minds off all the tragedy in their life. Overall, it was a great day and a really good experience.

Tournament Day Today was the day of the tournament, which everyone was very excited about. We were having the tournament at Chilanga Football Club, which was good because they had marked our pitches for us instead of using cones. I picked up my team from Chilanga School and presented them with their t-shirts, which they were all very happy to receive. I walked to the football club with them which was an amazing experience because there were other schools and supporters accompanying us and they were all trying to out-sing each other! When we arrived at the football club we sat all the kids down and sorted out the order of play. |

Our first game was against Masamba School, all the players were massive (to the dismay of my players). Unfortunately, we lost our first game 3-0 which was not the start we were looking for. After that game my team had a break and I was asked to referee a game. This was enjoyable and challenging at the same time! Later that afternoon, we played Socso School, to whom we lost 4-3. After that game, we played Guardian Angels School (we drew 2-2). When we finshed all our games we were put into either the Spoon, Plate, Bowl or Cup teams- my team was put into the 'Plate'. |

We played Guardian Angels in the semi-finals to whom we lost 2-0 which meant we were knocked out of the tournament. I felt extremely sad for my team because I could see how much it meant to them - all they wanted was to win! I was asked to referee the Plate final, which was very good because it was a very tight match, with Guardian Angels only winning 1-0. The tournament was an illustration of how quickly the kids picked up the rules and techniques of Tag Rugby- it was fantastic to watch.
