'SDK' triumphed at the Royal Albert Hall

Hurstmere School’s urban-pop group, SDK, brilliantly connected Classical music to Grime music at their Music For Youth Schools’ Proms performance at the Royal Albert Hall on Wednesday 9th November 2011. SDK played to a 6,000 strong audience with tremendous confidence and enthusiasm, proving just how passionate they are about their music.
SDK features 15 year old rappers Jack Rutherford-Axcell, Riad and Habib Muyanja, who have been performing and writing together since they were 11 years old, Joe Hannen on guitar, Sami Bouzefrane and Sam Obaseki providing harmony and Tom Monks on keyboards. Their lyrics aim to send out a positive message about teenage life counteracting the stereotypical view of rap music in the media.
Over 60,000 performers entered the annual Music For Youth competition which, this year, saw SDK get through to the regional heats and on to the national finals in Birmingham. The boys triumphed in the national finals to achieve the prestige of performing at the Royal Albert Hall.
The Music For Youth event was only their third public appearance together. Their brilliant and energetic performance was enjoyed by their proud parents and families, school staff and fellow students.
