Mathematics
The Department occupies a suite of teaching rooms and is fully staffed with eight teachers. All rooms are equipped with Interactive Whiteboards giving the Department exceptional facilities.
Year 7
Upon entry to Hurstmere boys are set by reference to their Key Stage 2 results and an Internal test. Group size varies from around 30 in the top set to approximately 20 in the lower sets. Movement between sets is constantly under review.
During the first half of the Autumn term all boys undertake a “Rich Task” which involves data collection, analysis and reporting. The task is designed to stretch each and every child to the best of their ability. Pupils needing extra help often benefit not only from a specialist mathematics teacher but also from the help of a Teaching Assistant.
All boys take progress test examinations at Christmas and at the end of the year.
The Department has successfully implemented the National Numeracy Strategy, and the programmes of study, varied teaching styles and use of resources reflect this.
The main book resource for Year 7 for 2011-2012 is Level Up Maths published by Heinemann.
Year 8
Minor adjustments are made to the sets in light of each pupil’s performance in Year 7.
The Department continues the National Numeracy Strategy. Boys are formally tested at Christmas and take a further Progress Test in May.
