The Show Must Go Onâ¦
Hurstmere School pupils used the power of social media to bring their end of term music concert into people’s homes. Our boys were determined that despite lockdown, the show must go on with a virtual concert on YouTube.
Weekly online Studio Fix lessons have taken place since April and the boys have written songs and have recorded soundtracks and videos. A compilation of these, along with individual performances by pupils were enjoyed by parents and families, school staff and Governors.
The Music Department were enthusiastic to share Hurstmere’s continuous talent and the results of the pupils’ hard work, particularly during such unusual times. The concert included a range of performances from soloists, musicians and Harmony Army and their band. Along with three songs written about the effects of lockdown and another performed at the Music for Youth Regional Festival 2020, Harmony Army collaborated to write and record a song for the Black Lives Matter campaign. The boys felt it was important to show their solidarity and support, using quotes from Dr Martin Luther King’s powerful speech.
The concert finale was a recording by Music for Youth* at their Proms 2019 at The Royal Albert Hall. The track “The Future Is Us ” was especially written for the finale and Harmony Army were thrilled to lead the singing, accompanied by an orchestra and big band.
Mrs Bennett and members of SLT praised the huge efforts and commitment of the performers and the continued support of parents and school staff. Parents messaged:
Thank you so much for putting together the online concert. We all enjoyed it so much!
“I think tonight’s concert was the crowning glory!! Amazing songs - lots of originals, lots of amazing talent. Did miss seeing the boys perform live but the virtual concert was fantastic!!”
“Seeing the Royal Albert Hall recording brought a lump to my throat - such an amazing achievement!! “
“The Music Department definitely goes above & beyond!”
The concert was coordinated by Mr Ballard, Head of Music, and Mr Gilbert, our Studio Fix musician in residence. Mr King, Mr Monks, Mr Richardson and Mrs Ahern were also thanked for their continued support of the Music Department.
